Infertility is diagnosed by a medical professional after a single or couple’s inability to conceive after one year of sexual activity without contraception. The woman, man or both may be the cause of the infertility. A man may have misshapen sperm or a low sperm count. A woman may have endometriosis, a hormone imbalance or uterine fibroids. Additional physical, emotional and lifestyle choices may affect fertility. There are medications and available assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including Inter Uterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT), Tubal Embryo Transfer, Gamete Intra- Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Intra- Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) that may be suggested. Donor eggs, donor sperm or donated frozen embryos may be used during procedures.
